Protecting Metal Against Rust
Metal protection paint is designed in such a way that it helps prevent rust from forming. Rust on metal railings can be caused by a number of conditions. One of the most commonly met problems is wear and tear on the paint protecting the metal from rusting. Metal rusts anytime it is not protected from moisture. This is why metal protection paint is a must, because it prevents rust by stopping moisture from attacking the metal. Paint against rust generally provides protection against corrosion, sunlight, and weather for carbon steel, cast iron, stainless steel, and aluminum.
To stop the rust and restore metal to a new rust free condition, the rust must be completely removed. In the past, this implied removing the rust and paint, then priming and repainting the surface. However, this was a very time consuming and expensive process because of the many hours required to grind off the rust and paint.
Now there are non-toxic, latex-based products that stop the rust without time spent grinding off rust and paint. These are painted over the rusty surface to neutralize the rust and prime the entire surface. A good topcoat of metal protection paint will then restore the metal to a new condition and give it long-term protection against rust. As long as this topcoat of paint is maintained and not allowed to crack and breakdown, rust will not come back. Therefore, this paint should be used on any surface where rust protection is a concern.
Some forms of metal protection paint can also work well on metal surfaces that have already begun to rust, helping prevent further corrosion. This means that there is no need to chip off the paint in order to get to the rust, because the metal protection paint prevents further damage.
